Creating Leaders Scholarship Student finalist in Worldwide Physics Competition

15/05/2017

One of our Creating Leaders Scholarship students, Maria José Sarmento, was part of a team of 6 students from the Portuguese School of Dili that entered a worldwide competition for high school students. The competition was sponsored by the renowned European Centre for Particle Physics (CERN), located in Geneva, Switzerland.

The students, named “Team Lorosae”, studied research from the world’s largest particle accelerator, the LHC (Large Hadron Collider) and from this created a proposal entitled “Discovering the Bragg peak in water”. The proposal detailed how they would test their experimental ideas, intended to contribute to the studies of radiation in eliminating the effects of cancerous growths.

Lorosae Team was among the 29 finalists from a total of 151 teams from 37 countries, having been awarded the mention of high praise – “status highly commended“.

As finalists, the team received an invitation to carry out a study visit to CERN. Thanks to the generosity of two individual Members in the Order of Malta, Maria José was able to travel to Switzerland with her team.

Creating Leaders is an Order of Malta scholarship program in Timor-Leste. Like many developing countries, Timor-Leste has high levels of poverty and low national human development. Education is an important vehicle to employment, independence, social and political empowerment and consequently, national development. However, a cycle of poverty often creates barriers to the children’s participation in education.

The Scholarship supports underprivileged children, like Maria José, to participate in formal continuing education.

More about the Creating Leaders Scholarship program:

– The children eligible to scholarship will come from disadvantaged situations.

– Children who are nominated must demonstrate academic promise and enthusiasm for their studies

– The children who are awarded scholarships are taught that it comes with a responsibility of “service to those they can help”, according to the fundamental ethos of the Order of Malta.

– The scholarship provides not only the payment of school fees, but other assistance and support to help overcome barriers that might prevent the children’s participation in education eg. transport, meals. uniforms

Currently there are 15 children in Timor-Leste involved in the program.

Sponsoring a Child in the Creating Leaders Scholarship Program costs $70 a month.
