THE HON. MARGARET WHITE AO BIOGRAPHY

The Honourable Margaret White AO has enjoyed a diverse and successful career in the law, in the military, and in service of the wider community.

Mrs White was admitted to practice as a barrister in 1978 and appeared in a number of landmark constitutional cases, most notably Mabo v Queensland. She also tutored and lectured in law at the University of Queensland.

In 1990 she was appointed a master of the Supreme Court of Queensland, and in 1992 was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court. She was the first woman to be appointed to the court.

She was appointed to the Court of Appeal in 2010 and retired from the bench in June 2013. She was also a member of the University of Queensland senate (1993–2009) and deputy chancellor of the University of Queensland (2006–09) receiving an honorary Doctorate of Laws from the University of Queensland in 2005.

Following her retirement from the bench, Mrs White chaired the Queensland Racing Commission of Inquiry (2013 – 2014), and was one of the two Commissioners leading the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory (2016 – 2017).

Mrs White was the first member of the revived WRANSR in 1968 and served as a commander in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve (2002–10) and deputy president of the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal (Cth) (from 2008).

In 2013, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia “for distinguished service to the judiciary and to the law particularly in Queensland, as a leading contributor to legal education and reform, and to professional development and training”.

Mrs White has been involved in many cultural and charitable endeavours, including the Order of St Lazarus (of which she has served as Queensland President). The Archbishop and Bishops of Queensland have recently appointed her as the independent Chair of the Queensland Catholic Education Commission, with effect from March 2018.
